The Engineers Canada faculty licensure consultation closed. The feedback is in. Now comes the part that matters most — what engineering programs actually do with the information.
We've been speaking with accreditation coordinators and program directors across the country. A clear picture is emerging. Programs are not sitting still. They are taking action — but the speed and quality of that response depends on one thing: how organized their accreditation data already is.
Here are four patterns we are seeing.
Pattern 1: Curriculum Committees Are Re-Mapping Licensed Faculty Involvement
The most common response we hear is curriculum review. Programs are looking at their course maps and asking: "If the criteria shift from counting AUs to measuring meaningful involvement, does our current evidence hold up?"
This is a good reflex. The consultation document made clear that the new criteria will assess meaningful and substantial involvement of licensed engineers — not just their presence in the timetable. Programs that have been tracking faculty involvement only as a licensure status field (P.Eng., progressing, or neither) are finding that the data is too thin to answer the new question.
The coordinators who are ahead on this work are the ones who already had richer evidence in place — course descriptions showing licensed faculty roles, assessment rubrics linking faculty contributions to learning outcomes, and narratives connecting licensed perspective to graduate attributes. They can build the new picture because the underlying data exists.
The ones starting from a spreadsheet with three columns — name, license status, courses taught — have more work to do.
Pattern 2: Programs Are Gathering Data on Faculty They Didn't Know They Had
A surprising number of coordinators are discovering licensed faculty contributions they had no record of. Faculty members who hold P.Eng. but don't teach the core courses where AUs were traditionally counted — capstone supervisors, lab instructors, co-supervisors on senior design projects, industry placement coordinators.
Under the current AU system, these contributions are invisible. They don't show up in the Specific AU count because they don't deliver the measured lecture hours. Under an outcome-based framework, they could be exactly the evidence that demonstrates meaningful involvement.
Programs are now conducting informal surveys, sending emails to faculty, and holding curriculum committee meetings to catalogue these hidden contributions. The process is slow because the data is scattered — held in individual faculty heads, departmental notes, and files that were never intended for accreditation reporting.
If this data had been captured continuously, the response to the consultation would be a report, not a research project.
Pattern 3: Cross-Department Planning Is Finally Happening
Perhaps the most encouraging signal we are seeing is that accreditation preparation is expanding beyond the coordinator's office. Programs are bringing department chairs, associate deans, and faculty development leads into conversations about the proposed criteria changes.
This matters because the faculty licensure change is not just an evidence management problem — it's a resourcing problem. If programs need to demonstrate deeper licensed faculty engagement, that affects course assignments, hiring priorities, adjunct recruitment, and professional development investment. Those decisions sit with chairs and deans, not coordinators.
The programs doing this well have one thing in common: they can show their leadership a clear picture of current state. A readiness dashboard that maps licensed faculty to courses to indicators. A gap analysis that identifies where evidence is thin. When the data is organized, the conversation with leadership is productive. When it's a spreadsheet only the coordinator understands, the conversation stalls.
Pattern 4: Evidence Systems Are Being Evaluated — Not Just Spreadsheets
The consultation has triggered a wave of tool evaluation. Coordinators who were content with their spreadsheet-based systems six months ago are now asking whether those systems can handle outcome-based evidence. The honest answer, in most cases, is no.
Spreadsheets are great for counting. They are not good for connecting — for linking a faculty member's licensed status to their role in a specific course to the learning outcomes that course addresses to the graduate attributes those outcomes support. The new criteria require that kind of connected evidence. The evidence you need is relational, not tabular.
Programs are looking at purpose-built accreditation platforms for the first time. The ones moving fastest are the ones that treat the tool selection as part of the preparation plan, not a separate procurement exercise. Evaluate now. Decide now. Implement before the self-study cycle forces a rushed decision.
The Common Thread: Data Is the Bottleneck
Every response pattern we are seeing runs into the same constraint: scattered data.
Curriculum committees can't re-map evidence efficiently when the evidence lives in twelve different spreadsheets. Faculty surveys take weeks because there's no central record to cross-reference against. Leadership conversations stall because the coordinator can't produce a readiness picture in real time. Tool evaluations drag on because the requirements can't be articulated without understanding what data you actually have.
The programs responding fastest to the consultation are the ones with centralized, connected evidence. Not because they have better faculty or more resources — because their data is organized in a way that supports action.
The message is simple: the quality of your response to regulatory change is limited by the quality of your evidence management. You can't prepare for what you can't see.
What to Do If You Are Starting From Scratch
If your evidence lives in spreadsheets and the consultation announcement left you behind, you're not alone. Most programs are in this position. Here's what separates the programs that recover quickly from the ones that stay behind:
Start with a data inventory, not a to-do list. Before you plan your response, understand what you have. List every source of accreditation-related data — course files, faculty profiles, assessment results, curriculum maps, CI reports. Identify where each piece lives and who owns it. This inventory is the foundation of everything that follows.
Build a connected map, not a better spreadsheet. The goal is not a neater spreadsheet — it's a connected evidence map where faculty credentials link to courses, courses link to indicators, and indicators link to graduate attributes. This is the structure the new criteria demand. Build it now, populate it over the coming months, and you'll be ready when the criteria land.
Engage leadership with what you can show, not what you can explain. Bring a readiness dashboard to your associate dean, not a verbal report. Data that is organized and visual is actionable. Data that requires explanation is deferred.
