Curriculum Review for Accreditation: How to Map Your Program and Prove Coverage

The visiting team asks a simple question: "Show us how your program develops Graduate Attribute 3 — problem analysis." You open the self-study report. The narrative says the attribute is addressed across four courses. The evidence folder contains three assignments. Two of them are from last year. The third one covers a related topic but does not clearly map to the indicator the visiting team member is looking at.

The problem is not that your program does not teach problem analysis. The problem is that the connection between what you teach and what CEAB requires is buried in faculty memory, course outlines written three years ago, and a spreadsheet nobody has updated since the last visit.

A curriculum review is the foundational accreditation task. It comes before gap analysis, before evidence collection, before the self-study narrative. If the curriculum map is wrong, everything built on top of it is wrong.

Here is how to conduct a curriculum review that produces accreditation-ready evidence — from the initial course-to-GA mapping through the coverage analysis that shows visiting teams your program is intentional, not accidental, about every Graduate Attribute.

Why Curriculum Review Is the First Accreditation Task

Every other accreditation activity depends on the curriculum map. When you do a gap analysis, you are checking whether each Graduate Attribute has enough evidence mapped through the curriculum. When you write the self-study narrative, you are describing how the curriculum develops each attribute. When faculty submit evidence, they need to know which attribute and indicator their course addresses.

If the curriculum map is incomplete, the gap analysis will show false gaps or miss real ones. If it is outdated, the self-study narrative will describe courses that no longer exist or evidence that has been superseded. If faculty do not know how their course maps to the attributes, the evidence they submit will be untagged and unusable.

The curriculum review is the single highest-leverage accreditation task because it feeds everything else. Do it once, do it well, and every subsequent task becomes easier. Skip it or do it poorly, and you will spend the entire cycle cleaning up the fallout.

What a Curriculum Map Actually Shows

A curriculum map is a matrix: courses on one axis, Graduate Attributes and their indicators on the other. Each cell shows the level of coverage — introduction, reinforcement, or mastery — along with a link to the evidence that proves it.

CEAB requires eight Graduate Attributes, each with multiple indicators. A typical engineering program has 45-60 courses. The map is not a theoretical exercise — it is the operational blueprint for everything the program does. It tells you which courses introduce each attribute, which ones reinforce it, and which ones provide the culminating assessment that proves mastery.

I = Introduction, R = Reinforcement, M = Mastery. A well-designed curriculum will show each attribute progressing from introduction through reinforcement to mastery across the program. A gap appears when an indicator has no mastery-level course, or when introduction and reinforcement are in the same course with nothing in between.

The Four Problems with Spreadsheet Curriculum Maps

Most curriculum maps live in spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are not wrong — they are the starting point. But they create four specific problems that show up during accreditation reviews:

1. The Map Is Static

Course outlines change every year. Instructors update assignments. New courses are added. Old ones are retired. The spreadsheet curriculum map is typically updated once per cycle — during self-study preparation — and sits unchanged for the five years between visits. By the time the visiting team arrives, the map is often a year or more out of date.

2. There Is No Connection to Evidence

The spreadsheet says GA3.2 is addressed in ENG 205. The evidence for that claim — the actual assignment, exam question, or rubric — lives in a different folder, on a shared drive, or in the instructor's desktop. The spreadsheet contains a reference, not a connection. When the visiting team asks to see the evidence, the coordinator has to hunt for it.

This is the most common reason for "areas of concern" in visiting team reports. The program is fine. The evidence exists. But the coordinator cannot produce it quickly because the map does not connect to the evidence.

3. Coverage Gaps Are Invisible Until Someone Manually Checks

A spreadsheet shows what you have mapped. It does not automatically flag what you have not mapped. Finding that GA7 has no mastery-level course requires a human to scan every row and column. If nobody scans — and most coordinators are not paid to scan — the gap stays invisible until the visiting team finds it.

4. Only One Person Understands It

Spreadsheet curriculum maps are typically maintained by one person — the coordinator. When that person leaves, the map becomes a puzzle that nobody else can solve. We wrote about this in our post on coordinator turnover. The same problem applies to the curriculum map: institutional knowledge trapped in one person's understanding of one spreadsheet.

Step-by-Step: Conducting the Curriculum Review

Step 1: Gather the Course Inventory

Start with a complete list of every course in the program: code, title, credits, year/term placement, prerequisites, and the current instructor. This is usually available from the academic office or the program's course outline repository.

Verify the list against the latest program curriculum document. If there is a discrepancy — a course listed in one place but not the other — resolve it before proceeding. An incomplete course inventory produces an incomplete map.

Step 2: Map Each Course to Graduate Attributes

For each course, identify which Graduate Attributes and indicators are addressed. Use the course outline as the primary source, but verify with the instructor. Course outlines are often written years ago and may not reflect what is actually taught.

Assign a coverage level:

  • Introduction (I) — the attribute is introduced for the first time in this course
  • Reinforcement (R) — the attribute is practiced or built upon from earlier introduction
  • Mastery (M) — the attribute is assessed at a level that demonstrates the graduate can apply it independently

A rule of thumb: each indicator should have at least one Introduction, one Reinforcement, and one Mastery-level course. If an indicator only has Introduction courses, the curriculum does not prove mastery — and the visiting team will flag it.

Step 3: Link Evidence to Each Mapping

This is the step that spreadsheet-based processes skip because it is tedious. For each course-GA-indicator mapping, identify the specific evidence: the assignment, exam question, rubric, or assessment that proves the attribute is addressed in that course.

Store the evidence in a connected system where the curriculum map links directly to the evidence file. When the visiting team asks "show me how GA3.2 is addressed in ENG 205," the coordinator clicks one link and sees the evidence. Not a file path. Not a folder name. The actual evidence.

This is the difference between a curriculum map that is a reference document and one that is an evidence map — a living, connected system that supports the entire accreditation cycle.

Step 4: Run the Coverage Analysis

Once every mapping has evidence, run the coverage analysis. For each Graduate Attribute and indicator:

  • How many courses address it? (target: 3-5)
  • Is there a Mastery-level course? (required)
  • Is there a clear progression from Introduction through Mastery? (expected)
  • Is the evidence current? (target: within last 2 years)

Flag any indicator that does not meet these criteria. These are the curriculum gaps that need remediation before the visit. Step 5: Validate with the Curriculum Committee

The curriculum map is not a coordinator document. It is a program document. Present the completed map to the curriculum committee — or the faculty responsible for each course — for validation.

Specifically ask each instructor to confirm:

  • The GA/indicator mappings for their course are accurate
  • The coverage level (I/R/M) is correct
  • The linked evidence is current and representative

This step takes time — typically two to three faculty meetings or a series of one-on-one conversations — but it produces the faculty buy-in that makes evidence collection work. When instructors have validated their own mappings, they are more likely to submit evidence on time and in the right format.

Using the Curriculum Map in the Self-Study Report

The curriculum map feeds directly into the self-study narrative. Each section of the report describing how a Graduate Attribute is developed across the program should reference the map.

A strong self-study narrative does not just list which courses address each attribute. It describes the intentional progression: "GA3 is introduced in ENG 101 through structured problem-solving exercises, reinforced in ENG 205 and ENG 280 through increasingly complex design challenges, and assessed at the mastery level in the capstone project (ENG 490) where students independently identify, analyze, and solve an open-ended engineering problem."

That narrative is only possible when the curriculum map shows the full progression from Introduction through Mastery. Without the map, the narrative is a guess. With it, the narrative is a fact supported by traceable evidence.

Keeping the Map Current Between Visits

The curriculum map should be updated every year, not every seven years. Here is a minimal annual maintenance routine:

  • September — Verify course inventory against the updated program document. Add new courses, remove retired ones.
  • October — Confirm GA/indicator mappings with instructors for any courses that changed outlines this year.
  • December — Check evidence currency. Flag any evidence older than two years for instructor review.
  • March — Run coverage analysis. Identify new gaps from curriculum changes. Brief the curriculum committee.

This routine takes 4-6 hours per year spread across four check-ins. It prevents the 40-60 hour scramble that happens when the curriculum map is updated during self-study preparation, after the visiting team has already been appointed.

What Happens When You Skip the Curriculum Review

We see the same pattern at programs that delay or skip the curriculum review:

  • False confidence. The coordinator believes every attribute is covered because the old spreadsheet says so. The spreadsheet is three years out of date.
  • Evidence gaps at the worst time. The visiting team asks about an indicator. The coordinator cannot find evidence because the course that addressed it was retired two years ago and nobody updated the map.
  • Narrative-evidence mismatch. The self-study report describes a curriculum that no longer exists. The visiting team cross-references and finds courses listed in the report that have different content than described.
  • Faculty frustration. Instructors are asked to provide evidence for courses they no longer teach or attributes they do not recognize. The mapping was done without their input.

Every one of these problems is preventable with a current curriculum map that connects to evidence and has been validated by the faculty responsible for each course.

Where to Start

If your last curriculum review was before the last visit, start with Step 1 this week. Gather the course inventory. It takes an afternoon. Everything else builds on it.

If you already have a curriculum map, run the coverage analysis. Check every indicator for the I-R-M progression. Flag the ones that are missing Mastery-level courses. These are the gaps that the visiting team will find if you do not find them first.

If you are currently in self-study preparation — the 90-day countdown — and the curriculum map is not current, that is your first priority. Nothing else in the countdown works without it. The self-study narrative, the evidence compilation, the gap analysis — all of them depend on a map that accurately reflects what the program actually teaches.
