If you are an accreditation coordinator in a Canadian engineering program, you probably don’t follow US Department of Education rulemaking. It’s not your jurisdiction. It’s not your accreditor. And the last thing you need is another regulatory headache on top of CEAB self-study prep.
But something happened in May 2026 that you should pay attention to. The US government reached consensus on a sweeping accreditation reform called AIM — Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization. It is the most significant federal intervention into accreditation in decades. And even though it only directly affects programs south of the border, it points in a direction that Canadian accreditation is already heading.
Here is what AIM changes, why it matters for CEAB programs, and what the coordinators who are already prepared have that the rest won’t have when the trends reach us.
What AIM Is
AIM is a negotiated rulemaking by the US Department of Education. A committee of accreditors, institutions, and government representatives agreed on a 173-page draft proposing sweeping changes to federal accreditation rules. The proposed rule will be published later in 2026 and take effect July 1, 2027. ABET is directly affected — meaning new requirements for engineering programs starting next year.
You don’t need to read 173 pages to understand the signal. There are three changes in the draft that matter for anyone who manages accreditation evidence, whether in Toronto, Calgary, or Boston.
Three Changes That Matter for Coordinators
1. Outcomes data expands dramatically
Accreditors under AIM must evaluate licensing exam results, employment outcomes with wage data, retention and graduation rates, and “educational and economic returns relative to total cost of attendance.”
For coordinators, this means more data collection and more evidence to organize. Engineering accreditation already tracks Graduate Attributes. AIM adds post-graduation economic outcomes that most programs don’t currently collect systematically.
CEAB doesn’t require wage data yet. But Engineers Canada has already been consulting on revisions to Appendix 1, and the trend is clear — accreditation bodies worldwide are moving toward richer outcomes evidence. The question is not whether Canadian programs will face more data requirements. The question is when.
2. AI transparency becomes a compliance area
AIM introduces requirements around research integrity, including how institutions use AI in teaching and assessment. Accreditors must evaluate whether programs have governance around AI use that ensures learning outcomes are still being met.
CEAB-accredited programs are already wrestling with this. Students using AI to write code, generate design reports, or draft reflections — how do you assess genuine learning? AIM makes this a formal requirement in the US. In Canada, it’s an informal expectation now — visiting teams ask about AI policies, and programs without a clear approach notice it in their feedback.

3. Continuous monitoring replaces periodic review
The old model of accreditation was simple: gather everything for a massive self-study every six years, host the visiting team, wait for the report, then forget about it until the next cycle. AIM shifts the expectation toward ongoing, real-time monitoring. Accreditors are expected to receive and evaluate data continuously, not just at cycle-end.
This is the change that creates the most work for coordinators who are still operating on spreadsheet cycles. If your evidence lives in files that only get organized when the self-study looms, continuous monitoring is not something you can switch on. You need a system that captures evidence as it is generated, links it to the right criteria, and keeps it current.
That is not a new idea for MapOutcomes users. It is literally what the platform does. But for programs still on spreadsheets, the shift from periodic to continuous is the difference between a manageable workflow and a crisis.
Why Canadian Programs Should Pay Attention
AIM is US law. It doesn’t apply to CEAB. So why should a coordinator at a Canadian university care?
Three reasons.
First, accreditation trends flow both ways. ABET and CEAB share the same outcomes-based DNA. When ABET adopts new requirements under AIM, CEAB tends to follow within a few cycles. The convergence is real.
Second, dual-accredited programs are affected immediately. If your program holds both CEAB and ABET accreditation — or is considering ABET — the AIM requirements apply to the ABET side now.
Third, the direction is the same regardless of jurisdiction. More outcomes data. AI transparency expectations. Continuous evidence collection rather than periodic crunches. These are global trends. The US is just putting them into law first.
The Coordinators Who Are Already Ahead
There is a group of accreditation coordinators right now who are not worried about any of this. Not because they are ignoring it, but because their systems are already built for it.
These coordinators work in programs that use a connected evidence platform. When CEAB adds a new Graduate Attribute indicator, it is a configuration change, not a spreadsheet rebuild. When the department needs to show how AI governance is embedded in their assessment strategy, the evidence is already linked and traceable. When the self-study cycle starts, they export a report that has been building itself for six years.
That is the advantage of building your evidence infrastructure now. Not because AIM is forcing you to. Because the future of accreditation — in Canada as much as in the US — requires it.
The coordinators who act in 2026 will look back and realize it was the last time they had the luxury of choosing when to prepare.
